British Chartbusters of the 60s & 70s

1975

The British charts of 1975 were led by Scotland's Bay City Rollers topping the year ahead of the Stylistics, Mud, Queen and Glitter.

 

  • The Bay City Rollers were the year's biggest act thanks to three big singles "Bye Bye Baby" (the number two single of the year), "Give a Little Love", another chart topper, and "Money Honey", a number three. The band also had a number one album with "Once Upon a Star" - the fifth biggest LP of the year.

  • Second spot went to Philadelphia vocalists the Stylistics, whose album, "The Best of the Stylistics", was the biggest LP of 1975 and who also had a quartet of top ten singles including number one hit "Can't Give You Anything But My Love". Their other single hits were "Star on a TV Show", "Sing Baby Sing" and "Na Na is the Saddest Word".

  • Mud were the third biggest performers with a number one hit "Oh Boy" and four more top ten records including "The Secrets That You Keep", "Moonshine Sally", "L-L-Lucy" and "Show Me You're A Woman".

  • Number four artists of the year were Queen who had hit the number two spot the previous year with "Killer Queen" and now took the top spot with the biggest single of the year, "Bohemian Rhapsody" - a million seller in 1975 that went on to repeat the performance in 1991 and eventually sell over two million in the UK. Their album "A Night at the Opera" was also a number one.

  • Still rocking in 1975 were Gary Glitter and the Glitter Band, number five and in the top five acts for the third year. As in 1974 there were hits for the band both with and without Gary. Gary Glitter had top ten hits with "Love Like You and Me" and "Doing Alright With the Boys". The Glitter Band reached number two with "Goodbye My Love" and followed this with top twenty hits "The Tears I Cried" and "Love in the Sun".

  • Among the other bigger acts of the year was Rod Stewart whose number one hit "Sailing" was the third biggest of the year. He also hit the top five with "This Old Heart of Mine" and scored the second biggest album of 1975 with "Atlantic Crossing". 10cc had a number one single with "I'm Not in Love" (fourth biggest hit of the year) following that with top five single "Art for Art's Sake". Comedy actors Windsor Davies and Don Estelle revived "Whispering Grass" for a novelty number one that was the fifth biggest hit of the year.

  • Although he was primarily a album artist David Bowie had a big singles year in 1975. In addition to his number two charting album "Young Americans", his re-released "Space Oddity" (originally a hit in 1969) reached number one in the singles chart and he had top twenty hits with "Young Americans", "Fame" and "Golden Years". David Essex followed his 1974 success with a number one "Hold Me Close" and two top twenty singles "Rollin' Stone" and "If I Could".
